History & Overview
West Yarmouth is a village in the southwestern part of the Town of Yarmouth, bordered by Hyannis (Barnstable) to the west, Nantucket Sound to the south, and South Yarmouth to the east. The area was part of the original Yarmouth settlement of 1639 and developed more slowly than the maritime-oriented north side. By the early 20th century, the south shore's warm-water beaches and proximity to Hyannis made West Yarmouth a popular summer destination, and the Route 28 corridor filled with motels, restaurants, and tourist attractions.
With a year-round population of approximately 6,000, West Yarmouth is smaller than South Yarmouth but shares many of the same civic challenges: aging infrastructure, Route 28 revitalization, the impact of seasonal tourism on neighborhoods, and the ongoing sewer expansion project. The village has seen increased attention from town officials regarding hotel and motel oversight, code enforcement, and neighborhood quality-of-life concerns. Lewis Bay, shared with Hyannis, is a defining natural feature and a focus of water-quality improvement efforts.

Demographics Snapshot
West Yarmouth's population is roughly one-quarter seasonal — the village sees a significant influx of visitors during summer months, which impacts traffic, public services, and neighborhood character. The village has a higher proportion of rental properties and seasonal housing compared to Yarmouth Port, reflecting its tourism-oriented economy along Route 28.
Active Issues Affecting West Yarmouth
Hotel & Motel Oversight
West Yarmouth residents have raised repeated concerns about conditions at some Route 28 motels, including reports of drug activity, code violations, and disturbances. A January 2025 hotel check led to arrests on drug possession and outstanding warrants. The town has been working on stricter licensing and inspection requirements, but enforcement remains a challenge during peak tourist season.
Sewer Expansion Impact
The $207 million sewer expansion extends into West Yarmouth, with planned connections along Route 28 and surrounding residential streets. Homeowners face future betterment assessments and mandatory connections. The project aims to reduce nitrogen loading in Lewis Bay and protect the drinking-water aquifer, but the cost and disruption affect property owners directly.
Route 28 Corridor Transformation
The town has been exploring ways to redevelop and modernize the Route 28 corridor in West Yarmouth, including transitioning aging motel properties into mixed-use or residential developments. The balance between preserving the tourism economy and improving year-round livability is a central debate among residents and town officials.
