History & Overview
Harwich Center is the geographic and civic heart of the Town of Harwich. Located inland along Main Street (Route 124), the village is home to Town Hall, Brooks Free Library, several churches, and the community center. The village grew around the intersection of Main Street and Route 39, with a classic New England town center layout.
Harwich has deep roots in the cranberry industry β cranberry cultivation began here in the early 1800s. The annual Cranberry Festival, held each September, draws thousands of visitors to Harwich Center and is one of the Cape's signature events. The Cape Cod Rail Trail passes through the village, providing a popular recreational connection to surrounding towns.
