π² End of the Line: The Cape Cod Rail Trail Terminus
North Eastham is where the Cape Cod Rail Trail reaches its northern end β the 25-mile paved path that starts in Dennis and winds through Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, and Eastham before terminating at Locust Road just south of the Wellfleet town line. The trailhead parking lot here is often the quieter starting point for a ride, compared to the busier access points further south.
The trail follows the old Old Colony Railroad right-of-way, which once carried passenger and freight trains from Boston to Provincetown. The railroad ceased operations in 1965, and the state converted the corridor to a bike path in the 1970s and 80s. At the North Eastham terminus, you can still see the gentle grading and straight alignment that mark this as a former rail bed.
Riding to Provincetown: Ambitious cyclists do continue beyond the official trail terminus along Route 6 into Wellfleet, Truro, and Provincetown β but be warned. Once the paved trail ends, you’re sharing the road with Route 6 traffic. In peak summer months (July and August), this stretch can be genuinely dangerous, with heavy traffic, narrow shoulders, and distracted drivers. Locals generally advise against it unless you’re an experienced road cyclist riding early in the morning. There is ongoing advocacy to extend the trail all the way to Provincetown, but funding and right-of-way challenges have kept the extension in planning stages for years.

A Route 6 institution since 1960. Arnold's is one of those Cape Cod seafood shacks that has been doing it right for over 60 years β fried clams, lobster rolls, raw bar, and ice cream in a no-frills setting with picnic tables. The line out the door in July is part of the experience. Cash and cards accepted now, but the vibe hasn't changed.
A beloved breakfast spot on Route 6 in North Eastham. Homemade donuts (the apple fritters are legendary), solid diner breakfast, and strong coffee. Family-owned since the 1980s. Get there early in summer β locals know this one, and the line forms fast.
First Encounter Beach
Cape Cod Bay beach where Pilgrims first encountered the Wampanoag. Bay views.
