History & Overview
West Dennis is the southwestern village of the Town of Dennis, bordered by the Bass River to the west and Nantucket Sound to the south. The village developed around the Bass River's western bank, with fishing, boat-building, and the cranberry industry forming the early economy.
The defining feature of West Dennis is its beach. West Dennis Beach, stretching along Nantucket Sound at the end of Davis Beach Road, is one of the longest and most popular public beaches on the Cape's south shore. The beach has a large parking area, concessions, restrooms, and lifeguards in summer — drawing visitors from across the region.
The village is primarily residential, with Route 28 running through its northern edge and connecting to the Bass River Bridge into South Yarmouth. West Dennis shares many civic services with the other Dennis villages, including police, fire, and schools. The village center along School Street and Lower County Road has a quieter character than the Route 28 corridor.

Bass River & Bridge
The Bass River forms the western boundary of West Dennis, connecting Follins Pond and Grand Cove to Nantucket Sound. The Route 28 bridge links West Dennis to South Yarmouth.
West Dennis Graded School
A historic one-room schoolhouse (now a community building) at 67 School Street. Serves as the Precinct 5 polling location and hosts community events.
Lower County Road
A scenic back road running parallel to Nantucket Sound through West Dennis and Dennis Port. Passes through residential neighborhoods, past beach access points, and small businesses.

A quieter neighborhood Nantucket Sound beach near the Bass River outlet. Less crowded than West Dennis Beach. Resident sticker required for parking.
🚣 Bass River — Boat Access
The Bass River is accessible from several points in West Dennis for kayaking, canoeing, and motor boating. Access to Follins Pond, Grand Cove, and Nantucket Sound.
