Role & Authority
The Select Board is the chief executive body of the Town of Yarmouth. Under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 41, the Board has broad authority over town administration including:
- Hiring and supervising the Town Administrator
- Setting policy and priorities for town departments
- Approving contracts, licenses, and permits above designated thresholds
- Calling Special Town Meetings
- Representing the town in intergovernmental matters
- Voting on all major expenditures and capital projects
- Serving as the licensing authority for alcohol, food service, and entertainment
The Select Board does not set the annual budget β that authority rests with Town Meeting, with Finance Committee recommendations. However, the Board prepares and advocates for the budget that goes to Town Meeting.
Active Issues Before the Board (2025β2026)
The Board has ongoing oversight responsibility for Yarmouth’s massive sewer expansion project. Following the November 2025 fatal trench collapse, the Board voted to require full-time safety monitoring for all sewer construction sites.
Project page βThe Board is overseeing a community process for the future use of the Mattacheese Middle School site. Community meetings are ongoing through 2026.
