History & Overview
Dennis Village is the historic center of the Town of Dennis, located on the north (Cape Cod Bay) side of the Cape. The area was originally part of Yarmouth, settled in the 1630s by English colonists. In 1793, the eastern parishes of Yarmouth voted to incorporate as a separate town, naming it after the Reverend Josiah Dennis, who served as minister of the local parish from 1725 until his death in 1763.
The village grew around its churches, a small civic center, and the maritime economy. In the 19th century, Dennis Village became known for its sea captains and shipbuilders. In 1927, Raymond Moore founded the Cape Playhouse on Route 6A, which became known as "the Birthplace of the Stars" β launching the careers of Bette Davis, Henry Fonda, Humphrey Bogart, and others. The Cape Cinema next door features a ceiling mural by Rockwell Kent.
Today, Dennis Village retains its quiet, residential character. The village is centered around the intersection of Route 6A and Old Bass River Road, with town government offices, the Dennis Public Library, and the Josiah Dennis Manse Museum all within walking distance. Scargo Lake and Scargo Tower β offering panoramic views from the Outer Cape to Provincetown β are two of the village's most visited landmarks.
