History & Overview
Barnstable Village is the historic heart of the Town of Barnstable and the seat of Barnstable County. Located on the north side of the Cape along Route 6A and Cape Cod Bay, the village has served as a governmental center since 1685, when Barnstable County was established.
The village is defined by its colonial-era buildings, the County Courthouse complex, and Route 6A β the Old King's Highway, one of the oldest roads in America. Barnstable Village was one of the first English settlements on Cape Cod, founded in 1639 by a group of religious dissenters from the Plymouth Colony. The village grew around its harbor, Barnstable Harbor, which provided access to Cape Cod Bay for fishing and trade.
Today, Barnstable Village is a quiet, residential community with a strong connection to its colonial past. Sandy Neck Beach, a 6-mile barrier beach extending across the northern edge of the village, is one of the Cape's most significant natural resources. The Sturgis Library, the Coast Guard Heritage Museum, and the Trayser Memorial Museum preserve the village's rich history.
