Leadership & Role
Senator Fernandes serves as Senate Majority Whip in the 194th General Court (2025β2026). He was first elected to the Massachusetts House in 2016 representing the Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket district β a constituency that included all of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. In 2024, he won election to the State Senate for the Plymouth and Barnstable District.
His legislative focus areas include clean energy and offshore wind, coastal resilience, housing affordability, fisheries protection, and environmental policy. He has been a leading advocate for the offshore wind industry and Cape Cod’s fishing communities.

The Plymouth and Barnstable Senate District covers the Upper Cape communities of Barnstable, Sandwich, Bourne, Wareham, and Carver, along with portions of Plymouth County. Senator Fernandes also represented the full Cape and Islands (including Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket) during his years in the House.
