DID YOU KNOW
The Surfside bike path is the most-used cycling route on Nantucket, carrying thousands of riders daily in summer between town and Surfside Beach β€” a flat, scenic 2.5-mile ride that’s become a quintessential island experience.

History & Overview

Surfside is a residential area on Nantucket's south shore, defined primarily by its namesake beach β€” one of the most popular and accessible beaches on the island. The area stretches south from the center of the island to the Atlantic coast.

In the late 1800s, there was a brief, ambitious attempt to develop Surfside as a resort community, including a narrow-gauge railroad from town. The venture ultimately failed, but the area gradually developed into a residential neighborhood. The historic Surfside Life Saving Station (1873) was converted into a hostel and remains a landmark.

Today Surfside is primarily residential, with a mix of year-round homes and vacation rentals. The area's main draw is Surfside Beach β€” a wide, south-facing beach with consistent surf, lifeguards in season, and concession facilities. The paved bike path from Nantucket Town to Surfside is the island's most popular cycling route.
