DID YOU KNOW
Nantucket Town’s cobblestone Main Street is one of only a few remaining cobblestone streets in America, laid in the 1830s to reduce mud from horse-drawn carriages.

History & Overview

Nantucket Town is the commercial, cultural, and governmental center of Nantucket Island. Located on the north shore of the island along Nantucket Harbor, the town is where virtually all of the island's civic life takes place β€” from the ferry terminal and Main Street shops to Town Hall and the Whaling Museum.

The town's origins date to the 1660s when English settlers established a community around the Great Harbor. By the late 1700s, Nantucket Town had become the whaling capital of the world, with a fleet of over 125 ships sailing from its wharves. The Great Fire of 1846 destroyed much of the waterfront, but what survived β€” and what was rebuilt β€” created the remarkably preserved townscape visible today.

Walking through Nantucket Town is like stepping into the 18th and 19th centuries. Weathered cedar shingle buildings line cobblestone streets, and the Historic District Commission ensures that new construction and renovations maintain the island's distinctive character. The Nantucket Historic District was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966.
