History & Overview

Miacomet is a south-central area of Nantucket that has seen significant residential development over the past several decades. The name is of Wampanoag origin, and the area's defining geographic feature is Miacomet Pond, one of the island's larger freshwater bodies.

Unlike the historic centers of Nantucket Town and Siasconset, Miacomet's development is relatively recent. The area was largely open moor and farmland until the second half of the 20th century, when residential neighborhoods began to expand outward from the town center.

Today Miacomet plays a critical role in Nantucket's ongoing housing challenge. The area is home to many of the island's affordable and workforce housing developments, including projects by the Nantucket Housing Authority.
