Tisbury (Vineyard Haven)

The year-round heart of Martha’s Vineyard — a working harbor town with a real Main Street, the island’s main ferry terminal, and a community that keeps the lights on all winter.

DID YOU KNOW
Tisbury is the only Martha’s Vineyard town that prohibits the sale of alcohol. It has been a dry town by local vote since the Prohibition era — making it the last remaining dry municipality on the island.

History & Overview

Tisbury — better known as Vineyard Haven — is the commercial and transportation hub of Martha's Vineyard. The Steamship Authority ferry from Woods Hole docks here, making it the first thing most visitors see when they arrive. Unlike the exclusive summer colonies of Edgartown or Chilmark, Vineyard Haven is a town that works for a living year-round.

The harbor has been active since the 1600s. By the 19th century, Vineyard Haven was one of the busiest ports on the East Coast — a shelter for vessels rounding the dangerous shoals of Nantucket Sound. The town's Three Bricks district still reflects that maritime wealth. A fire in 1883 destroyed much of the town center, which was rebuilt with the Victorian commercial architecture visible on Main Street today.

Today Tisbury is home to about 4,000 year-round residents and serves as the island's practical spine. Main Street has the hardware stores, pharmacies, and grocery stores that the whole island relies on. The town remains governed by an Open Town Meeting and a five-member Select Board, with a Town Administrator handling day-to-day operations.

Active Issues

Housing

Year-Round Housing Crisis

Vineyard Haven faces the island's most acute housing shortage. Workers essential to local businesses — teachers, health workers, tradespeople — struggle to find affordable year-round rentals as properties shift to seasonal use.

Transportation

Ferry Capacity & Traffic

As the main ferry port, Vineyard Haven bears the brunt of summer traffic. The SSA terminal, parking, and Main Street congestion are ongoing civic flashpoints every summer season.
