History & Overview
Chilmark is the most remote and exclusive town on Martha's Vineyard — the Up-Island town that most tourists never reach. With only about 1,100 year-round residents, it is one of the smallest towns in Massachusetts. But its landscape of rolling hills, ancient stone walls, working sheep farms, and ocean views is arguably the most beautiful on the island.
Chilmark's history is extraordinary. In the 17th through 19th centuries, a genetic condition caused widespread hereditary deafness in certain island families, concentrated particularly in Chilmark. The result was Martha's Vineyard Sign Language — a distinct sign language used by hearing and deaf residents alike, making Chilmark one of America's earliest bilingual communities. MVSL was a significant influence on the development of American Sign Language.
Within Chilmark is the tiny fishing village of Menemsha — a working harbor with lobster boats, fish markets, and sunsets so famous that people arrive hours early to claim a spot on the jetty. The dock scenes from Jaws were filmed here. Parking is extremely limited. The town's beaches are restricted to residents and legal renters — a policy that keeps them uncrowded and locals-first.
Key Places & Landmarks
Menemsha Harbor & Village
The most photographed spot on Martha's Vineyard — a working fishing harbor with lobster shacks, sunsets over Vineyard Sound, and an atmosphere unchanged since the Jaws era. Larsen's Fish Market and The Galley are institutions. Arrive early; parking disappears fast.
Lucy Vincent Beach
Widely considered one of the finest beaches in New England — dramatic clay cliffs, powerful surf, and a clothing-optional section that has been tolerated for decades. Restricted to Chilmark residents and renters only. Non-residents cannot access.
Squibnocket Beach
A beautiful, remote ocean beach on the south shore. Residents and renters only. Known for excellent surfing when the Atlantic swells arrive. The surrounding pond and barrier beach are a birding destination as well.
Beetlebung Corner
The town center of Chilmark — a crossroads surrounded by a grove of beetlebung trees (tupelo). The Chilmark Store, a beloved local deli and gathering spot, is here. The name comes from the tree's wood, used historically to make bungs for whale oil barrels.
Chilmark Chocolates
A beloved small-batch chocolate maker that has been an island institution for decades. Handmade truffles, turtles, and seasonal specialties. The shop is a pilgrimage for visitors to Up-Island — and worth the drive.
Gay Head Lighthouse Area
The road through Chilmark leads to the Aquinnah cliffs and lighthouse. The approach through open farmland and ocean views is part of what makes the Up-Island drive one of the most scenic in New England.
Active Issues
Eroding Cliffs & Shoreline
The clay cliffs along Chilmark's south shore, including areas near Lucy Vincent Beach, are eroding at a significant rate. Some private properties have been lost. The town debates natural retreat versus engineered solutions.
Resident-Only Beach Policy
Chilmark's policy of restricting its beaches to residents and renters has faced periodic legal challenges. The town has defended the policy as a matter of local governance. It remains a defining feature of Chilmark's civic identity.
