History & Overview
Edgartown is the oldest and most architecturally distinguished town on Martha's Vineyard. Settled in 1642, it was originally called Great Harbor before being renamed in 1671. As the county seat of Dukes County, it handles administrative functions for the entire island.
The town's golden age came in the early 19th century, when Edgartown's whaling fleet made it one of the wealthiest towns per capita in America. Ship captains built the grand Federal and Greek Revival homes that still line North Water Street — white clapboard with black shutters and widow's walks. The architectural integrity of these blocks is extraordinary, virtually unchanged from the 1840s.
Today Edgartown is the island's most upscale destination — boutique hotels, fine dining, and high-end shops fill the historic center. It also connects to Chappaquiddick Island via the famous On Time Ferry, a three-car cable ferry that crosses the channel every few minutes, year-round.
Government & Civic Life
Edgartown is governed by a five-member Select Board and an Open Town Meeting. As the county seat, Edgartown also hosts Dukes County government offices including the Registry of Deeds and the County Courthouse.
Key Places & Landmarks
Edgartown Lighthouse
A classic white lighthouse at the entrance to Edgartown Harbor, accessible via a short barrier beach walk. Stunning views of the harbor and Chappaquiddick. The Martha's Vineyard Museum manages the lighthouse and offers tours.
North Water Street & Historic District
One of the best-preserved blocks of Federal and Greek Revival architecture in New England. White-columned whaling captains' homes dating to the 1820sβ1840s line the street. The streetscape is virtually unchanged from the height of the whaling era.
The On Time Ferry to Chappaquiddick
The world's smallest ferry (3 cars) runs every few minutes across the Edgartown channel to Chappaquiddick Island. "On Time" means it has no schedule — it just runs continuously. Chappaquiddick has beautiful beaches, wildlife refuge, and a remote character.
Edgartown Whaling Church
The 1843 Greek Revival church on Main Street is one of the most photographed buildings on Martha's Vineyard. It was built by local whalers and remains an active congregation. Its columns and steeple define the Edgartown skyline.
Edgartown Harbor & Main Street
A working harbor with dockage for yachts and fishing boats. The Memorial Wharf is a great spot for watching ferry and boat traffic. Main Street's boutiques, galleries, and restaurants are among the island's most upscale.
Mytoi Japanese Garden
A surprising and serene Japanese-style garden on Chappaquiddick, maintained by the Trustees of Reservations. Koi ponds, Japanese maples, and azaleas in a woodland setting. Free and open to the public year-round.
Active Issues
Affordability & Year-Round Housing
Edgartown's desirability has driven median home prices well above $1 million. Year-round residents and workers face severe challenges finding affordable housing as more homes shift to seasonal use.
Chappaquiddick Erosion
Chappaquiddick and the barrier beaches protecting Edgartown Harbor face ongoing erosion from storms and sea level rise. Coastal management is a persistent issue for the town's conservation commission.
