Edgartown

The island’s most elegant town — white-columned whaling captains’ houses, cobblestone lanes, a handsome harbor, and the Chappy Ferry to Chappaquiddick. Edgartown has been the Vineyard’s county seat since 1642.

Edgartown was established in 1642, making it the oldest town on Martha’s Vineyard and one of the oldest municipalities in Massachusetts. It has served as the Dukes County seat continuously since its founding.

History & Overview

Edgartown is the oldest and most architecturally distinguished town on Martha's Vineyard. Settled in 1642, it was originally called Great Harbor before being renamed in 1671. As the county seat of Dukes County, it handles administrative functions for the entire island.

The town's golden age came in the early 19th century, when Edgartown's whaling fleet made it one of the wealthiest towns per capita in America. Ship captains built the grand Federal and Greek Revival homes that still line North Water Street — white clapboard with black shutters and widow's walks. The architectural integrity of these blocks is extraordinary, virtually unchanged from the 1840s.

Today Edgartown is the island's most upscale destination — boutique hotels, fine dining, and high-end shops fill the historic center. It also connects to Chappaquiddick Island via the famous On Time Ferry, a three-car cable ferry that crosses the channel every few minutes, year-round.

Active Issues

Housing

Affordability & Year-Round Housing

Edgartown's desirability has driven median home prices well above $1 million. Year-round residents and workers face severe challenges finding affordable housing as more homes shift to seasonal use.

Environment

Chappaquiddick Erosion

Chappaquiddick and the barrier beaches protecting Edgartown Harbor face ongoing erosion from storms and sea level rise. Coastal management is a persistent issue for the town's conservation commission.
